Private Tuition & Education in Hong Kong
Private tuition has been very popular in Hong Kong for many years. Whether it simply has been a private English tutor or a different individual tutor for a specific subject, Hong Kong parents have been keen to make sure their children receive every opportunity to gain good grades.
Lower income families typically send their children to tutorial classes where up to 800 students can be receiving lessons at the same time. These classes consist of a group of students in the lecture theater with the tutor with other students observing the lessons from different locations around Hong Kong via video link ups. The value of these types of lessons is highly questionable. However, it has been widely reported in the local press that the tutors who deliver these services can earn in excess of HKD $1,000,000 per month.
For those who can afford it and want individual help for their children, schools such as ITS Tutorial School can provide for their needs. At schools such as this, students have typically one to one lessons with their subject specialist tutor. Some classes are also offered such as SAT classes or subject revision classes coming up to major external exams like the IB International Baccalaureate or UK A Levels and UK I/GCSE classes.
With the recent changes to the Hong Kong curriculum and the introduction of the NSS (New Senior Syllabuses) or the 3,3,4 education model (three years of junior secondary school, three years of senior secondary school and four years for an undergraduate degree at university) it is expected many more students will opt for this one to one tuition model. The HKDSE and the associated Liberal Studies IES (Independent Enquiry Study) is structured much more like other international education syllabuses with a greater emphasis placed on course work. It is unlikely that very large classes will be of much benefit for students trying to complete projects like the IES.
Private tuition is not just undertaken by students. Many adults also attend lessons to improve their workplace English skills. There is also considerable demand by HK people to prepare for International language exams such as the IELTS exam. Preparation for such exams often takes place in a small group or class, although some people do prefer more tailored learning which one-to-one learning can give them.
In recent times there has also been a growing demand for language classes for very young children. For example parents who wish their children to learn French can send their young children to classes and playgroups to learn the subject.
ITS Tutorial School can provide support in all these areas and more.
