Electric cars are becoming a trend among the environmentally conscious.  As gas prices become unpredictable and change drastically from one day to the next, many drivers are fed up.  Electric vehicles provide an earth-friendly alternative to the gasoline-powered cars that have held our pocketbooks hostage for decades.  These cars are not that much different than a regular gas-powered car, but they can make a huge difference in your travel expenses in the course of a month.  Electric cars run from a rechargeable battery supply and an electric motor.

Have you ever wondered how these cars actually work?  Is it worth the cost to convert your car to electric power, or to buy a new electric car?  Before you make a decision about moving to electric vehicles, you should fully investigate the pros and cons.

Electric cars can vary greatly depending on which manufacturer you choose.  The common ground is that all electric vehicles run on electricity provided by batteries.  The batteries send electricity to the electric motor, which turns the transmission.  Then the transmission turns the wheels, and soon, you are on your way to work.  The internal structure of an electric car is a lot like gas-powered cars.  Yet the components are used in different ways to reduce pollution and stretch mileage.

There are several advantages to driving electric cars and fuel cell cars.  The most obvious pro is the positive effect on the environment.  Electric cars don’t give off any emissions, so they are good for the earth.  These cars are also three times more efficient than gas-powered cars.  One of the most noticeable advantages of electric vehicles is the silent engine.  While gas powered cars are typically loud, electric cars are very quiet.  When you ride in one of these cars, you will have an enhanced listening environment for music or conversations or the cell phone.  The silence can be blissful after a stressful day at work, but it also can be dangerous.  People are typically alerted to the danger of an oncoming vehicle by the sound of the engine.  Pedestrians won’t hear an electric car coming, so drivers should be extra cautious to avoid accidents.

Electric cars are well-balanced, with the batteries in the middle of the vehicle so it is easy to handle.  These cars drive a lot like their gas-powered sisters, and most electric vehicles can outperform gas-powered cars at take off.  Electric motors have full torque instantly, while regular cars have to build up the torque as they go.  Unfortunately, electric cars aren’t speed demons and typically can’t sustain top speeds.

Perhaps the most popular aspect of electric cars is the reliability factor.  These cars come complete with everything you need for maintenance and care.  You can even get after-market features such as regenerative braking, programmable chargers or specialized resealable tires.  Electric vehicles don’t require much maintenance, but you will have to charge them from time to time to maintain the battery power supply.  Most batteries will last for four years or 40,000 miles.

Electric cars also have several safety advantages.  If you get into an automobile accident, an electric car is much safer than a gas-powered car. The batteries tend to absorb a lot of the shock of impact, because they are filled with fluid.  Manufacturers also install customized safety features in electric cars such as circuit breakers to prevent explosions, electrocutions or fires.  The only safety disadvantage is found in electric cars with lead-acid batteries.  If these batteries rupture during a car accident, the acid can burn a person and cause serious, permanent damage.  However, this is highly unlikely to ever occur.

Finally, electric cars are known to be the best choice for individuals who live a budget-conscious lifestyle.  You can buy a new electric car, or lease one from an authorized dealer.  You can also convert some regular gas powered cars to electric power if you have electric car conversion kits.  Electric cars are a wonderful investment, especially if you do a lot of traveling.  These cars can save you thousands of dollars in gas over the course of a year.  While gas prices may vary from day to day, the cost of driving an electric car will be consistent and allow drivers to carefully budget their travel expenses.  Above all, electric cars are a great choice for people who care about the environment and want to do their part to protect the earth from pollution.
